A
COMPLETE BREAK

“He
let go of the tables [of the Decalogue] and he broke them” (Ex.32.19)

The
first of the two tables of the Decalogue contained principles relating
to man
and G-d. The second contained principles
relating to man and his fellow.

Those
who approach life from a humanistic point of view are in accord that
the values
represented in the second table are ideal for mankind. The goal of any
society subscribing to these
values is the attainment of the highest ethical standards in human
relationships.

In
serving the golden calf, the people broke a commandment relating to man
and
divinity inscribed on the first tablet.
Despite this, both tablets were broken.
This indicates that a society without faith is both morally and
ethically corrupt. (Meorah Shel
Torah)

We
will honour and respect our fellow when we recognise that he is created
in the
divine image. It follows that humanity
without godliness tends to be inhuman.
