THE NEED TO TAKE A STAND
PARSHA
TAZRIA 08
“Tahor Hu he is ritually pure” (Lev.13.13)
Mashiah Ben David will only come in a generation that is entirely meritorious or entirely liable.
How may this be explained?
Each person should consider himself either meritorious or liable. He must choose one alternative or the other and not hop between two branches. (Meme Hadaat)
We tend to become alarmed when extremists in society vociferously expound their fundamentalist uncompromising one-sided views. Do not be concerned by such bigots, for we know where they stand and consequently are able to deal with them.
Rather, it may surprise us to realise that the greatest threat to the values of our society is posed by those who vacillate in their opinions. Influenced by the way the wind blows, they lack the courage of conviction to take a stand, especially on moral issues. Having no commitment, they are not worthy of salvation.
On the other hand, those worthy of redemption are the ones who endeavour to live up to the standards to which they subscribe, or who concede that in their ways of life they fall far short of acceptable conduct and feel guilty about their behaviour.
