OPEN TO REASON
“You shall surely open your hand” (Deut.15.8)
The act of giving should not be prompted by feelings of compassion. A person should give and give again because that is the right thing to do. (R Hayyim Vital)
Giving to the needy is an act of Tzedakah – righteousness.
The Mitzvah is to set things right, to level the playing field and ensure thereby that everyone gets a square deal. It follows that the opening of the hand needs to be deliberate, premeditated and calculated.
The intention is that we give openly, with open mind and with open heart.
True Tzedakah is of our own free will.
