JUST JUST
“Eleh HaDevarim these are the words “ (Deut.1.1)
The term Eleh with Gematria 36 alludes to the thirty six righteous of every generation. The term Devarim alludes to the Dabarim – those who speak out against injustice. By virtue of these just people the world endures. (cf. Rabbeinu Ephraim)
At this time of the year we recall the many catastrophes that have befallen the People Israel over thousands of years. Other nations have succumbed to lesser adversity while Israel endures.
Rabbeinu Ephraim suggests that Israel survives because of the champions of justice who rise to speak out against wrongdoing in every generation. Because those who take up the cause are true and sincere, the few(36) prevail against the many.
36 is 2 times 18, i.e. 2 x Tzaddi, the 18th letter of the Alef Bet that symbolises righteousness. At the same time 18 = Hai – living.
Large numbers of half-hearted protests against the wrongdoing of society have little effect. It is the intensity of the doubled devotion to the good that ensures the continuity of the valued life.
We dare not lose hope, holding both thumbs with doubled patience. In the end G-d will do that which is right for those who wait Lo (Gematria 36) – for him. (Isaiah 30.18)
