PLEASURABLE UPLIFTMENT
“The Kohen shall shut up the Nega the person afflicted with a skin eruption, for seven days” (Lev.13.4)
The Ayyin, the final letter of Nega – skin disease, may be transposed to the opposite side for Oneg – pleasure or delight. The Sefer Yetzirah states that there is nothing worse than Nega to make a person feel low, and nothing better than Oneg for upliftment.
The period of quarantine for someone afflicted with Nega is limited to seven days to ensure that a Shabbat is included, for the Oneg – delight, of Shabbat is bound to elevate the disposition of the Nega who feels down in the dumps. (Sifte Tzaddik)
The Torah teaches that disease is a symptom of dis-ease. It follows that well-being is the outcome of the welling up of feelings of joy and blissfulness.
Feeling at ease on the day that pleases is the easiest way to dispel our dis-ease.
