EMERGENCY LIGHTING

“But all the people of Israel had light where they dwelt” (Ex.10.23)

Had the Torah description of the plague of darkness followed the format of the other plagues, the text would have read: ‘But all the people of Israel did not have darkness’.

This suggests that there was darkness everywhere, even where the Israelites lived. Israel however had the Torah to give them light. The Egyptians did not. (Commentators)

With the demand for electricity escalating world-wide, power outages may be expected. To overcome the inconvenience and disruption there are stand-by generators that kick in when the power is cut. We install emergency lighting in private homes and public buildings so that there is light in the darkness for our safety.

The Torah is the generator of Israel. Some keep the Torah and enjoy its light all the time. Some turn to the Torah occasionally for enlightenment.

Then there are some who have the Torah in reserve for emergencies. Should all else fail, they turn to Torah as a last resort and discover that it does not fail them. The light of Torah guides them and directs them in times of darkness. It lights up their way and leads them to safety.
