FORTY-TWO STAGES
“Ve’eleh these are the stages of the People of Israel when they went forth out of the land of Egypt” (Num.33.1)
The Gematria of Ve’eleh – these, is 42, and there are forty-two stages in the journeying of Israel through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land. This is the journey of life in the here and now to the promise of the hereafter.
The number 42 alludes to the forty-two lettered name of Hashem associated with primal creation.
42 = 6x7, the numbers for the days of creation, and 4+2 = 6. Six is the perfect number, for all the numbers by which 6 is divisible add up to 6.
1+2+3 = 6
1x2x3 = 6.
The next perfect number is 28.
The Kaddish sanctifies the great name of Hashem, that is the great name of forty-two letters.
The Kaddish is composed of units of four and ten and twenty-eight words or letters; 4+10+28 = 42.
The Kaddish is the means for the elevation of the People of Israel from one stage to the next in their journey of life, leading ultimately to Olam Haba – life beyond this life.
