JUST ENDING
“I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of Hashem by doing Tzedakah righteousness Umishpat and justice” (Gen.18.19)
What exactly was Avraham’s righteousness and justice?
A creditor brings a debtor to court. The debtor admits that he is liable to the creditor for the sum of money demanded by him. However, he does not have the wherewithal to settle his debt. Avraham offers to lend the debtor the sum of money owing, on condition that he settles forthwith. In coming forward to aid the debtor, Avraham does Tzedakah. In the end justice is done, for the creditor is not out of pocket and Avraham has his loan repaid on easy terms.
(Sefer HaParshiot)
Justice alone may be harsh and cause much suffering. Avraham is the archetype for Gemilut Hesed – the practice of loving kindness, that leads to acts of Rahamim – compassion.
With the exercise of justice there is no compassion; with the exercise of compassion, justice prevails.
