CALL TO ACTION

“Hakol Kol the voice is the voice of Yaakov and the hands are the hands of Esav” (Gen.27.22)

The term Kol – voice, is repeated in our Torah text with a variation in spelling. In the first instance, the vowel letter Vav is omitted, indicating a lack, a weakness. The second Kol carries a Vav to indicate a strength of voice.

There are two aspects of Kol relating to Yaakov. The first is the voice of prayer, the second is the inner voice.

Our teachers warn us that when the voice of Yaakov as prayer is weak, the hands of Esav as the forces of evil are strong, ever threatening to place the Community of Israel in jeopardy. On the other hand when the voice of Israel’s prayer is strong, the Community prevails.

Then there is the inner voice. It is the voice of prophecy, the voice of inspiration, of divine challenge to raise the Community of Israel to new and greater spiritual heights for the good of mankind. As yet, this inner voice is weak.

Today’s world lacks charismatic figures to uplift and motivate us and transform the ideal into action. Nonetheless the time will come soon for the strengthening of the prophetic vision and the changes it will bring about. The hands of Esav will be bound and rendered ineffective as mankind begins an era of universal harmony and peace.
